Chapter one

I peer into his den, the tamed wolves at his side, he’s sitting in his chair watching the fire. The windows are closed, all he has is his book, and the wolves.

“Father?”

“Hmmm?”

“Are you feeling better?”

“Joseph, you need not worry about your poor and decrepit father, he is long past dead.”

“Father… You shouldn’t talk like that…”

“Why not? It’s the truth…”

His voice is so ragged and tired, he coughs, blood spills onto his beard. I grab the cloth next to the chair and hand it to him, he coughs a little more and then the coughing subsides.

“Anything you need, Father?”

“No, but if you like you can sit with me…” He says as he motions to the wooden chair off to the side.

I hear the undying wind pound the windows, freezing the glass. I can imagine the cold snow the surrounds our castle, it’s like a wasteland out in the open, walk not but two steps and you’d be lost in the endless snow blizzard. Almost everyone in the small town surrounding our castle has left, those still staying won’t survive long. The only wood near us it the seemingly frozen trees north a mile from us. We try to harvest them but ice covers the trunks like steel plating that our armor is made of. The cattle are nearly vanished from our farms, same for the pigs, goat, chickens, and all other livestock.
Father motions for Shyla to come to him as I go sit down. He thinks he can speak to them as normal people, the wolves that is. He whispers into her perked ears, then lies back into his uncomfortable chair.

“What were you telling her this time?” I snicker

“To protect you when I die. There will be a scramble for the deed to this castle when I pass off into heaven or hell, and everyone to anyone will try any means to get rights to it, just for the massive untamed land I consumes.”

“Father, you’ve got time until your death. When you do I’ll keep this castle, in honor of you…”

“No you won’t, but you’re not going to give it up either. You are going to take Shyla and the pack and go travel the word, whether you want to or not, they’ll make sure of that.” He motions toward the wolves that seem to surround him.

I nod in agreement, although I never plan on doing so. The wolves of this small pack of five are Shyla, the alpha female, Hogan, the omega male, Julia, omega female, Baron, is their watcher, and Gretchen, the cub watcher, should they ever have puppies, my Father is the alpha male of sorts. They are all very young, Gretchen is only a year old, and Shyla is only two and a half, but they all know their role in the pack.

“It’s late, you should head to bed.”

“Only if you do after me, Father.”

“Of course my child.”

“I’m not a child, I’m almost a full grown man, Father.”

“Then you can leave an old man like myself rest in peace.” He says, smiling kindly.

“I suppose I could, but then what would I have to do?” I smile back at him.

I walk out of the room leaving him to his book and the wolves. I walk up the stairs to mine, put on my warm clothing and slip into my bed. I hear the steps of one of the wolves. I get up and open the door, it’s Shyla. I welcome her in and she lies next to me on my massive bed. Guess they really do obey him, or understand him in some way.

I wake the next morning to a whimpering from downstairs, barley audible. I walk down, the whimpering is coming from my father’s room. I push the cracked door open, the wolves are there, Shyla is pushing my father’s hand with her nose, his hand was limp. I quickly move to what has to be his dead body. I check his hand and it’s as cold as the air outside. I feel the tears fill my eyes before I can hold them back. I don’t cry, I just let them come, let them fall down from my face, fall down to the cold floor. In a way it was funny. Now I had to do what he asked of me just the night before.
I climb the stairs, tears still fresh in my eyes, the rest of the pack following me. Shyla seemed content on keeping me in her sights. But she still waited outside of my door as I dressed and packed my things, it was going to be like an adventure. I wrote a note to my mother, placing it upon her door, she was strong she’d understand.
A week later. We’re in the woods, heading for the town just on the other side of them. Shyla cuddles up against me as if I were Father. We came upon some thieves. I had thought they’d left me, the wolves, I noticed Shyla wasn’t rubbing up against me and looked around, they were al gone. I panicked a little, then they came, the thieves. One shoved me against a tree, another put a knife to my throat as they began to check my things. The one with the knife was the first to be hit, one of the wolves had leapt up and bitten down on his throat, the one that was checking my things was next, then the ones holding my arms. Only the young boy only a few years younger than me was left alive.
That night we camped. I made a tent for myself and then a big one for them. Some how they managed to get their tent down and layer it over mine in my sleep, how though? It must’ve blown down, probably didn’t place it right, but how did they drape it over mine? They would have to be at least as tall as me to do so.
It’s as if this forest never ends, it’s so quiet, lonely, wish I had someone to talk to. I try talking to the wolves, but it’s not the same. I think they understand me, but they can’t talk back, think I might go insane if I don’t hear a human voice soon. I could have sworn I saw a girl in the forest, running about in the distance between the trees, but I looked again and it was only Julia, must have been my eyes playing tricks on me.

We came upon a group of travelers, they welcomed me and the pack to join them for lunch. We ate and then bid them farewell, it was nice to have someone’s to talk to. I set up camp just a mile or so away. Again I set up their tent, and mine of course. I heard rustling this time and woke up slightly, voices.

“Don’t wake him.” I heard someone whisper.

“And why not?” A female voice, young, child like.

“Because it would most likely upset him.”

“So?”

“Just listen to us ok?”

“Ok, fine!”

“Ssssh!”

“Sorry your highness…” Says the child’s voice, mockingly.

I go for the flap of my tent and peer out through it. Silence. Did I imagine all that? I hear a crackling sound and Shyla comes into view. She pushes up against me to put me back in. I laugh a little but listen, it was quite cold out. I soon fall asleep. We’re walking through the forest, again, later.

“Shyla, you know what I heard last night?”

She looks up at me.

“I heard voices, they sounded both young and old, it was very interesting, since you, the others, and I are the only ones in our little group. It would be nice if I could have you reply me, but you can’t can you?”

She seems to slow her pace.

“Something wrong?”

She quickens again, keeping up. Gretchen picks up the pace as well, seeming to be cheerful. What was going on? There’s a howling as the sunsets, the ears of the pack are lit up.

“Which way?”

None of them move.

“That sounded like it was hurt, come on which way?”

Gretchen moves forward, Shyla makes a small growl at her, but she keeps moving, leading the way toward the howling wolf out in the forest. I drop my things.

“Hogan, wait here with the supplies.” He sits there right beside everything. I was talking to them like normal people. No matter, I head forward where Gretchen was pointing, moving as fast as I could. I pull a dagger from my sheath. We come to a clearing, a wolf is against the tree, bleeding, a bear standing up about to make a final blow. I run into the bear, full force, knocking it to the side.
The bear stands as I move back. He swipes at me and I move down, as strong as this creature was I was much quicker, least in the agility area. It swipes at me again, faster this time. Again, this time it catches my stomach with it’s enormous claws, I lose my balance and fall back. It comes up in front of me and raises it’s paw. One of them leaps onto the chest of the bear and then bounces off it knocking the bear down. After a few minutes of continues attacks the bear retreats back into the forest.
I go to the wolf that is injured, he was still alive. I pick him up, supporting his neck and hind legs. I make a run for the place where I left the supplies. Hogan is waiting, bag untouched. I lay the injured wolf down on the ground and reach for my bag. I pull out some bandages and herbs. I use a spare blanket and form a bed for him and put his limp body on it.
I set up my tent as Gretchen watches over the injured wolf. I don’t think his injuries were as bad as they looked. Shyla returns from the shadows, the nightly meal in her mouth, she drops it next to the fire.
Again I’m asleep in my tent when I hear talking:

“Why can’t he stay!”

“Julia! Sssh!”

“He can’t stay because he’s not part of our pack, that’s why.”

“Then how are we going to tell Joseph this?”

I peer out of my tent, around the fire I see five human figures, three girls and two men.

“I think he already knows, didn’t you notice the talk we had earlier today? He sounded as if he knew or at least thought something was different between us and normal wolves.”

“Please, he’s a lone wolf, he can’t survive without a pack.”

“Should we ask Joseph?”

“No, lets try and stay in our wolf form for now, we could cause him great pain if he knew.”

“He already does, how many times do I need to tell you?”

I notice all of them with a blanket around them, each one of them had one.

“We think he does, no telling what he does and does not know.”

I couldn’t take it, I had to ask them what was going on! I stepped out from the tent.

“Shyla, he knows already.”

“I said…”

“No, look.”

They all turn to me.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what’s going on?”
